The Daily Beast's Commitment to Diversity
The Daily Beast is committed to setting a higher industry standard in promoting diverse coverage and developing diverse talent. We aim to elevate stories that impact communities which reflect the full spectrum of human experience. We are committed to developing a news-media model for pay equity, for attracting, developing, and promoting diverse talent, and for representation—both in the stories we tell and the people we hire.
We have begun to advance our goals by taking positive steps towards making our workplace a more diverse and inclusive place. This process has included the creation of four diversity task forces, each led by a member of our leadership team to focus on the following areas: recruiting and hiring, employee education, employee support, and measuring and reporting data. We conducted comprehensive unconscious bias training for all employees and held a special more intensive session for managers of our largest teams. We are hosting a series of speakers from diverse backgrounds to share their work, experiences, and perspectives during our monthly all-hands meetings. We have created a second-read process for stories that deal with issues that impact ethnic, racial, religious, and LGBTQ communities, and we have updated our style guide to reflect the most accurate and respectful ways to describe and report on these communities. We have created a mentorship program as part of a reexamination of how we lift up and support employees and give every person in the organization a path for growth and development, as well as opportunities for leadership. As part of a commitment to interview job candidates from traditionally underrepresented groups, we have expanded our networks, identified new ways to attract diverse candidates, and opened up the hiring process to ensure a diverse range of perspectives on candidates.
As an organization and as individuals, we are dedicated to committing the resources and the energy necessary to create a diverse and inclusive organization. We are only at the beginning of this journey and will continue to push ourselves to confront our biases and create positive change in our company and our industry.
